Whiteville Elementary School was constructed in 1979-1980. The twenty-classroom building for grades K-8 was finished in 1980. This building includes a gymnasium, cafetorium, and Learning Media Center. Teachers and students moved into the building in January of 1981. The new school consolidated two schools: Whiteville Northside (grades 1-4), and Whiteville Southside (grades K, 5-8). In 1998 construction began on the 6th - 8th grade building. In January of 1999, the new addition was opened, this included twelve classrooms and a science lab.

In 1985, Whiteville Elementary School (WES) was one of forty-eight (48) schools in the state, and one of nine (9) in West Tennessee to receive the Exemplary Award for Basic Skills First Reading and Math Programs. The school accomplished a milestone in 1987 when it was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school was selected as a U. S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 1992. WES was recognized by Redbook Magazine’s “America’s Best Schools Project” in 1993 and 1995. WES was awarded Tennessee’s Outstanding Achievement Award by Governor Ned McWherter and honored by the Hardeman County Legislative Body with a Proclamation of School Excellence in 1993.

Whiteville Elementary has also received several grants. In 1998, the school received two Tennessee Technology Literacy grants as well as being awarded the Tennessee Education Edge Best Practices for the H.O.S.T.S. program. WES was awarded the three-year Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration Project grant by the Tennessee Department of Education in 1999. Whiteville Elementary School has been featured in local, regional, state, and national newspapers and publications. Several articles have been published outlining programs and achievements at the school. The Jackson Sun featured W.E.S. in its Special Program Edition in 1993. Our pre-school program was also featured in U.S.A. Today. These and other articles are documented by being displayed in the school lobby area and are in the school scrapbook.

Whiteville Elementary School is a unique and wonderful center of academic excellence.
